Due to the extreme winters on the island, most businesses and services are only open from early May to early October. Even during the summer season you will find the weather changeable so it is best to dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes, and pack some light weight rain gear just in case. Also, the local taxi service only works by appointment, so waving, whistling, or hollering won't do you any good.

Michigan's winters are nothing to sneeze at, with average temperatures of 14 degrees Fahrenheit. The summer average highs are a much more pleasant 83 degrees. |
