Camping Gems - District of Columbia Tips

Planning Your Trip

Once you decide what you would most like to see, it is a good idea to contact your state Representative or Senator and find out if you will need tickets or passes. It is best to do this as soon as possible. Also, since some buildings and institutions may close based on current intelligence info, you may want to check on the Washington Visitor's Information page for updates on any closings or changes.

Heat and Humidity
If you arrive during the summer months, give yourself a light schedule of activities the first couple of days if you are not use to high humidity.

Public Transportation
Riding the Metro may take some getting use to, but once you study the route maps, it's a great way to travel. Train lines are named for colors, route maps are posted inside each station and subway car, and each train displays the name of its farthest destination. If you want to study up in advance write Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, 600 Fifth St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20001, 202-637-7000.

Driving
If you plan on driving into DC, keep in mind that parking is limited and streets are very narrow. Because of this, if you're an RV traveler, it is best to leave your rig in the campground and either take your tow vehicle, rent a small car, take the Metro, or make arrangements with one of the many tour companies.
